Ask what support would be useful
A practical question such as “Would help organizing the move be useful?” can make the next step feel more manageable. Let the person participate in decisions about their housing and recovery plan.
Learn the home’s expectations
Review admissions and resident rules together when invited. Ask staff about current visiting arrangements, approved belongings, and how families should make contact. Confirm plans before traveling.
Keep communication clear and respectful
Agree on realistic ways to stay in touch and discuss practical boundaries around money, transportation, and visits. Avoid promises that you cannot keep. Encourage questions to go directly to staff when program details are unclear.
Respect privacy and get your own support
A family relationship does not automatically authorize staff to share resident information. Ask how consent works. Use the community resources page to find support options, and seek qualified help for clinical questions or urgent concerns.
